first thing Hayden Fry said , if you're going to play like champions , you're going to look like champions , well , in 1979 , the NFL champions were the Pittsburg Steelers

and seeing how the Hawkeye color were already black and yellow , it was a easy look to adapt

but yeah , it's well known the Hawkeyes copied the Pittsburg Stealers in 1979 , and have never looked back
