This happens all the time.
A horrible team gets the first pick. Drafts a QB. And then has the rookie start on a poor team that hasn't got enough talent. And when they look bad, it's the rookie QBs fault.
I'm philosophically against starting rookie QBs. It rarely fares well. They don't learn; they just get beat up and discouraged as they stay in survival mode. They need a vet in front of them to play out the year (no matter how mediocre his talent might be), in order to give the rookie a year to carry a clipboard and learn. Participate in another off season, OTAs, and training camp. Play a lot in yet another set of preseason games, and after all this then he will be far better equipped to lead the team PROVIDED the team around him has been improved through FA and draft picks and young players developing.
The kid is a very good talent. I watched that game and the loss certainly wasn't on him. It was team effort.
Let's not forget that the Jags also have a rookie NFL HC. His decision to try to score a TD when they were ahead 14 zip was a college coach-type decision. In the NFL you take the points when you can get them unless perhaps it's late in the game and you are coming from behind. Kicking a gimmie FG puts them up by 3 scores. And, if that had happened, the late drive by the Bengals would only have tied the game and not won it.
Meyer has a lot to learn as well.
