Coaches come to a realization with their qb at some point. And the realization is that they can either win at a high level with their qb or they can't. If the coach feels they can't, then it really doesn't matter if that qb is mediocre, average, above average or whatever you want to call him. His days are numbered.
McVay realized he couldn't win at the level he wants to win at with Goff. Same with Shanny, otherwise he wouldn't have drafted Lance. Same with Nagy and Trubisky. Or TB with Winston.
Mediocre, average or whatever is splitting hairs and really not that important. What's important is if the coach thinks they can win with X as his qb.
Jimmy G is done regardless of the stats he's put up. Shanny has made his mind up.
That's where I think they differ, though. Shanahan drafted Lance because JG couldn't stay healthy. If he wasn't missing large chunks of the past couple of seasons, I don't think they make that trade/pick. McVay didn't trade for Stafford for those reasons, his decision was based on Goff's production or lack thereof.
