I think outside of being competitive at football they knew how important it would be to keep fans interested in the star power. Even in 2016 when they traded for Jared Goff, the golden haired cal alum, I'm pretty sure they had it in mind that they were going to need to make a bang in order to start putting butts in the seats in their favor. I think the stafford trade had a business element to that too. Yes he was a good football upgrade but it also excited the entire city. So props to them honestly for chipping away at the marble
