What can we expect from Stafford on Game Day?

May 28, 2021 08:56AM
Context: I've been reading a lot of the the Lions board on Stafford to better understand what he does well and doesn't. What I've read that fans see as his strengths and shortcomings.

Not trying to make this a Stafford vs Goff thread, though it will be helpful to use as a comparison at some points.

Pros:
- Rocket arm that can throw at any angle or platform = more hairy pocket completions are possible. The clear biggest upgrade.
- At his best coming from behind late in the 4th quarter.
- Money on deep balls and broken plays.
- Lower turnovers. While exposes the football, he's got a sure grip and won't fumble like Goff. Will throw 50/50 balls but no easy ones to the other team.

Cons:
- Throws fastballs, even at close range. May lack touch on swing and close range slot plays. Causes drops? Rams have very sure handed WRs, but Goff also has touch.
- Will throw what the heck balls every game (what QB doesn't).
- Doesn't seem to play well in big games (playoffs) or against top opponents with clearly winning records.

One big scheme difference is that Stafford has generally had guys that are great at fighting for 50/50 balls (golladay, jones, hock). Separation and pinpoint accuracy were less important. Kupp/Woods/Jackson/Jefferson are all precision/timing WRs . Will this align with what Stafford is best at?
