Personally I don't see it so much as buying the hype as much as I see it as taking a variable out of a negative environment and expecting some sort of upgrade when putting it in a positive environment. Now that's not to say that Matt Stafford will ever be Aaron Rodgers but I wouldn't be so inclined to assume that his game could reach a level we haven't seen before with the way that Mcvay schemes things up.
That's why I was pointing out Aaron Rodgers record before lafleur. Just to show that even someone who, in my opinion, is an all-time great like Rogers can fail to reach their potential if they're surrounding elements aren't flourishing.
that said---many people said a lot of positive things about Goff, didn't they? And then, poof, he's gone. So, it seems opinions change pretty quickly based on the uniform a guy is wearing. Now, those of us who thought Goff was okay, but not smart and was regressing---were right---so why can't we be right again?
You can look at my posts, I was never overly negative on Gofff, just that after the KC game in 2018 he regressed and was never elite---his first year and through that KC game it could be argued he was near-elite---but after that, he had a rating of about 85-86, got sacked, fumbled---and I said some of it was possible the other things---scheme was caught up with, oline, Gurley getting hurt---all that, but through and through, Goff did regress
So, now, even know all you know about Lions and their woes, I am saying Stafford is not that good and never has been. Though I like his moxy and some things, he's just not elite and never has been.
