Rams take Texas OLB Joseph Ossai in PFF's 2-round mock draft

The Los Angeles Rams are hard at work scouting prospects in the 2021 NFL draft as the big event approaches just two months from now. One position they should be taking a long look at is outside linebacker, though finding a truly elite pass rusher at No. 57 will be difficult.
In Pro Football Focus’ latest two-round mock draft, the Rams grab some pass-rush help from the Big 12. At No. 57, the Rams select Texas outside linebacker Joseph Ossai, who converted from an off-ball linebacker to edge rusher full-time in 2020.
Here’s what Anthony Treash wrote about the pick for the Rams.
The Rams are unlikely to retain edge rusher Leonard Floyd due to their current cap situation and the price tag he will command in free agency. In turn, they get a prospect in Ossai who is similar to Floyd. Ossai is not in the same tier athletically, but he has the movement skills, flexibility and high-motor that allows him to win. At the same time, he’s going to struggle with the strength of NFL tackles. Ossai was still productive in his first full year as an edge rusher in 2020 after playing off-ball, recording an 80.5 pass-rush grade.
Ossai doesn’t have a ton of college production, only recording 11.5 sacks and 30 tackles for loss in three seasons. However, he does have the athleticism can burst that can translate to the NFL, not to mention a high motor. He never gives up on a play and though he still has to refine his pass-rush skills at the next level, there’s a solid base to build on.
In PFF’s mock draft, there were a few other intriguing prospects who Treash passed on for the Rams. At No. 58, the Ravens took speedy receiver Jalen Darden, who would undoubtedly help fill the Rams’ need for a dynamic playmaker.
At No. 62, the Packers take Syracuse cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu, who has become a popular prospect in the pre-draft process this year.
