Now that the Rams have Stafford they need to put the right type of players around him. We know we need a Center but we also need to fill in a deep threat WR.
Stafford loves going deep. He was #2 in deep shots this year. And McVay wants more explosives.
The first question is, could Van Jefferson fill that role? McVay thinks he'll be a star and we know he had a great top speed at the Senior Bowl last year. However, after watching him for a year it seems his skillset is closer to Woods' or Kupps. So I don't think it would be the best idea to go into the year with Jefferson penciled in as the deep threat.
We then look to free agency or the draft. There are available options in the draft, more likely to be the later rounds given other more pressing needs. Since we're all in this year, I don't see filling that critical role as being the wisest path. Which leaves free agency.
We know that Marvin Jones had a solid relationship with Stafford and that he is open to signing with us. (See his social media post the other day.) Spotrac projects he signs for approx. $10.5M.
So the trade....!
Would you trade Woods or Kupp for Marvin Jones + 2nd round pick? Per stats and various metrics such as PFF, Marvin Jones is in the same caliber tier as both of our WRs. Both Woods and Kupp would be steals for a new team at $10M per year. So much so that I think we could possibly get a late 1st for either.
If we trade Woods, we save $11.9M on the 2021 cap. If we trade Kupp, we save $10M on the 2021 cap. The idea is to take those exact savings, give them to Marvin Jones on a short-term deal (approx. $10.5M), and have Van Jefferson slide into Woods' or Kupp's role.
Deep threat WR would be taken care of and we have an extra 2nd round pick to use for Center, LB, Edge, or CB.
