I could be totally misguided but I think McVay has guys on the roster that have almost a redshirt year. Players like Darious Williams, outside of the last few games last year didn’t play hardly at all on defense, then became a starter. I imagine you keep roster spots for Trishtain Jackson, Xavier Jones and Hopkins et al for injury protection, FA losses, and the coaching staff saw something in them that they hope to develop like Williams..
