One of the worst mistakes a manager can make to is to evaluate a person for a higher position based purely on the performance of the job they already have.
Every year DCs and OCs get promoted to HC's and fail. Why? Two different jobs. Different skill sets.
None of us know what was behind McVay not promoting Pleasant (or another assistant) to DC. But at some level, McVay didn't think he was the man to be the DC. After all, a DC doesn't simply teach techniques and implement game plans, he evaluates the opponent and CREATES the game plans. He also has to manage the assistants, the players, and communicate directly every day with the HC.
So what I'm saying is that as you go up the ladder it is the management skills that matter more than the ability to teach or coach positions well.
