Wolford was 3-9 on passes over 20 yards. He had a QB rating of 64.7 against a defense that the offense under Goff usually dominates. AZ was playing the majority of the game with a backup as well. The Rams only scored 18 points.
If Goff had a game like that people would be calling for his head. I'm sure McVay wanted to prove with another QB the offense would generate more points and be more successful, unfortunately that wasn't the case.
In this context, your post supports my point.
My point isn't that Wolford is a superior QB. He was wildly inaccurate in that game.
However, 3-9 on passes over 20 yards means he took 9 deep shots. So you made a strong argument for me that deep shots are there to be taken in the scheme despite the purported OL struggles. I fully agree with you on that!
As for Wolford's effectiveness, his QB rating was bad but he was also the games leading rusher which resulted in a great QBR of 74.7. Goff has only had about 4-5 games higher than that QBR this year. But again, comparing the effectiveness between the two wasn't the point.
I think Goff became extra careful in an effort to cut down on the turnovers.
