Let's consider what these stats mean concerning the Rams. Other than Donald being the top pass rushing DT, SJD being #7 in run stop rate, and Whit at #3 in pass and #8 in the run, nobody else individually ranks in the top 10. Now let's look at the team rankings:
Defense Pass rush 9, Run stop 13
Offense Pass block 9, Run win 19.
At the beginning of the year, I suggested the Rams shed the long passing focus to protect the OLine. In the middle of the year, I suggested diversifying the run scheme. Both things happened and so the offense has collectively outperformed the OLine's individual and group performances. The defensive line is very good but collectively the entire defense is top ranked because the entire defense is so well connected thanks to Staley.
To me, this demonstrates how much coaching matters. The ability to design a plan that utilizes strengths and protects weaknesses among the players is critical to success. The ability to win the schematic chess match is probably the #1 most essential factor in any game.
The Rams don't have the most physically imposing team in the NFL. But they may have the smartest and most accountable. What I'm about to say makes me throw up in my own mouth a bit but I guess it's worth it...they seem built like the Patriots over the past two decades. Their ability to be schematically multiple on both sides of the ball is this team's true identity.
