Re: McVay explains Rams’ recent shift toward more 12 personnel...

While he talks about the personnel packages, what he did against the Patriots was EXACTLY what I've been preaching for the last two weeks concerning the TYPE of running plays. There were very few zone runs. On the second drive, CORBETT ACTUALLY PULLED TO THE LEFT, and it led to a 14 yard gain on 1st down. Then he employed Everett as a fullback. There were double team powers on a regular basis. Then I saw Reynolds become a lead blocker as he sealed the edge while he was the motion man.

So, what's the next step you ask? The play actions we ran REALLY SUCKED against the Pats. The screens we ran were generally ineffective and that's becoming a trend due to predictability.

The solution I'm hoping for is a focus on play action off power blocking schemes. The opportunity here will come from the tight ends down the seams as safeties will begin to key on the run action. The other wrinkle we need is to fake a screen and hit a long crosser to the other side. Once we establish consistency with these two things, it will become infinitely more difficult to predict what McVay will do on second and long.

Would McVay ever consider a fullback?
