Some of Sloman's kicks not resulting in touchbacks have been by design, in fact, in the Philly game, he placed it perfectly, it was just the coverage unit that was not good. I actually thought the Rams had their best special teams game of the year against the Giants and I'm like everyone else, just kick the damn ball out of the end zone, but I'm not sure Sloman can do that every time and he seems to be 30 yards behind the ball before kickoff too, or maybe it's just me.
Very possible that the ‘short kickoffs’ were intentional, den. I thought of that, myself.
But, if so, Bonamego needs to improve his coverage teams. At least one of them was returned beyond the Giants 40 yard line.
So if you execute properly the opponent's turn might get to the 15 or 20, so you save 5 or 10. Maybe there's a blocking penalty - not infrequent - that pins them further back. And there's the possibility a TO if you put the ball in play. But the flip side, of course, is that they get a return past the 25 or even break one.
Me? If I need a *break* - down a couple scores with time an issue and not yet willing to gamble on an onside kick? Maybe then you kick it short and hope something breaks your way. Otherwise, I say kick the ball out of the endzone and play defense.
