I think it goes something like this:
If Noteboom and Edwards are approximately even in their OG play, Noteboom gets the reps because his hoped-for future is as our LT (the most critical position on an Oline).
Now what happens if Edwards visibly outshines and out performs Noteboom at OG? I don't know what McVay would decide, but I'd play Edwards because the future is the future, and no one knows whether Noteboom will develop sufficiently to take over at LT. Therefore, if Edwards is clearly better than Noteboom and gives the Rams a noticeably better Oline, then I really doubt McVay would re-insert Noteboom. Although we could see some position sharing in order to develop them both.
No way McVay has Whit and Boom sharing at LT.

True.
I'd feel better about Boom getting in there and gaining experience if it was known ahead of time that Whit is not going to be back next year. Then, there is some justification and urgency as to why they are pushing for Boom to play.
Then again, he is signed with us for a couple more years. He may or may not be back.
It's a juggling act that we are up against.
Also, I'd like to see Boom actually play the position that he is being groomed for, LT.
