What is irrational in my view is starting an inferior OG when you have a superior OG on your roster.
You should be trying your best to win football games now. If Noteboom has a higher probability to whiff on a block and it costs us a game or worse our QB, trying to sell that because you’re thinking he could be your LT next year is nuts.
You don’t suboptimize your starters cause you don’t currently have the resources to replace your LT next year (maybe).
I think it’s slightly more nuanced than that, max.
For example, what if coaches view Boom at LG only ‘slightly’ inferior to Edwards?
And they feel that NFL snaps now between Whit and Blythe are invaluable prep for Boom at LOT? Maybe as soon as this year in event of a Whit injury? They might view the combination of these two things exceed the value of a slightly superior LG in Edwards? Besides, it’s reasonable to assume that Boom’s ‘temporary’ play at LG would continue to improve.
