Even in the twilight of his career, he's better than anyone we have in the front seven (AD excluded obviously). Dude missed 4 games last year and still had 9 sacks.
A number of those sacks were of the freebie variety. He might have been the least impressive 9-sack guy I've ever seen. Equally or more important, he was a bad run defender, and run defense is actually the Rams' biggest problem right now. They've been smacked around only once in the passing game (Bills), but were gouged on the ground against both Dallas and Philly, and didn't do that well against the Bills either.
Tempting to say, well, make Matthews a situational rusher. I'd rather gove those opportunities to the h Rams' own young guys, see whom they can develop.
