He's a rookie and is gonna still have to learn the pro game which is filled with nuance at a level rarely seen/taught at the collegiate level.
pure
observation and speculation on my part....but...
On the INT from Goff...Goff threw a hair inside on that deep curl to VJ expecting a slide inside from him...and VJ didn't take that inside half-step...whereas, the other guys(Woods, Kupp, Reynolds)
know to do it from all the years with McVay and these WR coaches. Also, on many runs downfield VJ was very half-assed on making blocks whereas, our other 3 guys EXCELL at blocking until the whistle....heck, you can often see Kupp blocking inline next the TE and looking like a TE blocking a sled at practice!!!! Woods was known for his stellar blocking more than his catching when he came to LA 3 years ago...and Reynolds is much better now at it too. It's a small piece of what a WR does...but it matters and would have helped Hendy gain or break bigger runs.
After playing much of the 1st 2 games...In the Bills' game, VJ's snaps dropped off a cliff after those early
6 plays....and Reynolds replaced him playing (
62) %90 of snaps.
The kid WILL learn cuz he's got great guys in his head & ear...and VJ will be a force for us as he learns more and plays more...but he's still a rookie and learning.
I still LOVE the pick and know he is wired right and will work harder to elevate his game and be a center piece in our passing game for the next 4yrs.
VJ just needs an offseason and more film work and coaching...and he'll get it in spades from that WR room!!!
