He is a big deal college head coach from Baylor who probably needed some financial incentive to cross over to the pros. Carolina set it up as an offer he couldn't refuse kind of thing. Plus he was getting interest from other NFL teams if I recall and the Panthers didn't want to compete for him so they just made him a rich offer no one else would match.
