I like the Staley hire and I also like that he'll bring a defense that is more unpredictable, disguises some things more, etc.
But they have a lot in place. The best defensive player in the league and a top-flight secondary featuring one of the top 10 defensive players in the league. The Rams need a couple things for this defense to be top tier:
- better red zone defense (they were 29th). Speaks to the focus on scoring.
- pressure off the edge. They'll get pressure from Donald but they'd better be able to get to the QB regularly with other guys.
Notice I didn't mention run defense. I do think they'll be better vs. the run in 2020. But strategically it's far, far less important than the above. Yeah, they got gashed badly vs. Baltimore (as did just about everyone) and at Dallas. But otherwise their run defense was not a problem last year. Heck I would put better special teams play above run defense in importance.
