I'm not the only one who has accused Goodell of being perhaps the most PC commissioner of the NFL that's ever been. I've seen sports media speak of it. It is unmistakable to not notice.
That being said, it's not his money to lose.....big time.... if by being PC the league doesn't play or plays to empty stadiums. It's the owners that lose the money and that will trickle down to a couple thousand of players. And don't ever think it doesn't matter to the owners because they're rich. They're rich because money matters almost more than anything. And don't ever think it doesn't matter to the players; they want (rightfully) the most they can get in their short careers. The idea of taking a league wide pay cut is unthinkable to them.
My guess is that a way will be found to have at least some fans in stadiums, and it might even go state by state. Governors can only press the matter so far before they are completely ignored. Of course, that's where Goodell's always present PC comes in versus the owners' desire to not lose billions.
And before someone decides to lecture me on the Virus, don't. Your view on the virus is your view, and mine is mine. This is still America, and people have the right to choose to go to stadiums or not. Here in Florida our Governor was hung in effigy by the media when he refused a one size fits all, state wide lock down. Dire predictions were made. But as time has gone on, he's proved to have been right in his approach. We have some of the fewest per capita deaths in the nation..... especially of large states. Our economy is hurt but not decimated. People here aren't ready to march on the State House like they are doing elsewhere out of frustration and desperation.
NASCAR and the NFL rule America's sports. NASCAR can, for a while, play to empty stands. I wonder if the NFL can? I doubt it. It wouldn't be the same game for the players or the fans. So who will win? The owners' desire for revenue? Or Goodell's desire to maintain Political Correctness?
Stay tuned.
