Pad speed is important since they all play games in equipment. I'm positive that even a 6'6" 240 lbs OJ Howard smokes Kupp in a foot race in pads. Kupp doesn't get open because he is the fastest player by any means. He uses good lateral quickness and deception to get open. He has enough speed to create separation but has trouble like most slower receivers with closing speed by faster corners. I don't know if any one has ever played Db but is extremely hard to cover a wr who you have no idea where he is going while running backwards. That's why closing speed on dbs is very important. They are going to get beat consistently but they have an opportunity after getting beat to make up with that with their closing speed. Out of 51 receivers who ran at 2017 combine Kupp was faster than 8 and slower than 42.
