I think we as fans are at a disadvantage because we aren’t privy to the play call and his responsibility on those plays. Many times it looks like Lewis holds the edge and engages the tackle. One could view that as he can’t get off blocks or one could say he is standing up the OT holding the edge and playing disciplined. I find it hard to believe that Nick Saban would keep starting a guy who can’t hold the edge and get off OT blocks as consistently as it appears on film. They do line him up in multiple places similar although not as dramatically as Isiah Simmons. He looks fluid in pass coverage has enough strength to hold up against the run and flashes instinctive pass rush moves and active hands. I think sometimes when we read things about someone being “the steal of the draft” and “ a longer Von Miller” we expect to put the tape on and see a human highlight reel. He was a third round pick, he was hurt and lost significant developmental time during two seasons, but he has the size speed and hands to develop into a solid pro. If he stays healthy and puts in the time and effort you have a prototypical OLB with pass rushing skills as well as pass coverage skills for TE and backs.
