managing the cap in the NFL and having a tank year

I often wondered if an approach in the NFL is to try to coordinate your contracts where you can prorate those signing bonuses such that you can load up and every few years you basically dump and reset and take all the cap hits in the same year. Basically, go out and sign minimum wage guys after you trade or cut the big salaries, take all of the hit in one year, and than reload and start the process up again.

The NFL (Not for Long) is such that having long term continuity because of age and injury just isn't that feasible and the only team to be able to do it year after year has been the Patriots. We see it over and over you can get really bad and turn back around and 1 or 2 years later you are playing in the superbowl. The latest being the Rams and the 49ers.

instead of trying to streamline your salary cap, to me, it makes more sense to have peaks and valleys and just unload and reset. It allows you to get the top players off of free agency easier by going with such an approach and planning for year with all dead money hitting at once gives you more room the other years.
