Not trying to be picky. But in today's NFL, with so much player movement and the constant manipulation and pressures of the salary cap, all but your top starters are short term guys.
For instance, it wouldn't shock me that if the Rams thought there was a WR in the draft that can take the top off D's, that they'd select him as high as pick 52 and then in a year let Cooks go. Not suggesting it, just a rather obvious example.
There are only a few guys that you don't look for replacements for. Donald, Goff, and Ramsey come to mind. JJ and Kupp might prove to be others. All other starters are at various levels of short term meaning 1, 2 years, 3 years at the most.
So to me, signing good vet talent that still has gas in the tank isn't like putting duct tape on a broken water hose. Rather, it is more like using a good used water hose to replace a leaky one because a new one costs too much or isn't immediately available.
Every season is a work unto itself.
