IMO, McVay realized he wanted a defensive coordinator that could coach Vic Fangio's defense, as McVay believe in that scheme, so he went ahead and hired one of Fangio's Chief Lieutenant's whose demeanor is similar to his. On offense, McVay realized it worked better with somebody like Matt LaFleur, who could handle the week of game preparation and work with the Quarterbacks too and that's why Kevin O'Connell was brought aboard....Don't be shocked if Brandon Staley does really well, he'll have a shot as a Head Coach and hopefully Fangio will be available by then.
