Going down the reading-too-much-into-it route, perhaps letting Bones leave was an indication they are moving on from Greg as well. Start new with both.
I suppose the opposite could be true too. Fassel didn't want to stay if they weren't re-signing Zuerlein. But that seems a little farther fetched.
