He got paid more or less exactly what starting DTs were getting the year he was up for his 2nd contract.

It was pay him that or let him go. That's how 2nd contracts work for guys considered starting caliber. You pay him the going market value for a starter or someone else does.

And I would say that being ranked 5th in Run Stop % among DIs is pretty good.

Now, I tend not to take PFF grades as being absolute, but I do accept them as ballpark. So their "ranked 5th" just means to me "pretty good."

VB said this about Brockers once--the coaches liked him, because while he didn't get flashy stats it's because in that scheme he was asked to do a lot of thankless things.

That means IMO a lot of people underestimate him.
