CB and S outlook for 2020

January 02, 2020 05:59PM
my last 2 position groups.

CBs:

Under contract for 2020:
Jalen Ramsey - cap hit 13.7m - if cut no dead money
Nickell Robey-Coleman - cap hit 4.5m - if cut no dead money
Troy Hill - cap hit 3.4m - if cut 0.5m cap hit
David Long - cap hit 0.92m cap hit - if cut 0.73m cap hit
Darious Williams - cap hit 0.66m - if cut no dead money

Free Agents:
none

Positional review:
Ramsey after a midseason trade didn't play like a top 3 CB and at times like every CB on the roster, looked lost. Rams are going to pay him, so I expect a better 2020 from him. NRC had a good year as a nickel CB and the trio of Hill, Long and Williams all flashed. If the Rams secondary problems are the result of Weddle screwing up the calls, then I expect a much better season with JJ3 back in charge of the secondary along with a 2nd year Rapp. This group has the potential to be a top tier group.

Free agency & draft priority: Low
I cannot imagine a scenario where the Rams don't extend Ramsey and after that, there is little to do. FA will not be a factor for CBs at all. As far as the draft, I am of the belief you draft a WR and a CB every year. I hope they take a guy later on. a guy I really like on day 3 is Neville Clarke UCF. Has nice size at 6'-1". Plays press man and off man on the outside and likes to tackle and blitz. he needs to add some weight and strength, but for a team with good depth like the Rams, draft and develop him. Can't teach his size, instincts and aggressiveness.

S:

Under contract for 2020:
Eric Weddle - cap hit 4.75m - if cut 0.5m cap hit
John Johnson - cap hit 0.96m - if cut 0.19m cap hit
Taylor Rapp - cap hit 1.06m - if cut 1.77m cap hit
Nick Scott - cap hit 0.60m - if cut basically no dead money
Jake Gervase - cap hit 0.59m - if cut no dead money

Free Agents:
Marqui Christian - UFA (unrestricted free agent, can talk and sign with anyone)
Donte Deayon - RFA (restricted FA, Rams can tender at 1st, 2nd or original draft round and receive that rounds pick form the team that signs him)

Positional review:
Weddle was the big disappointment this year as he was out of position, looked disinterested and frankly was a step slow or a step out of position. He should be cut. JJ3 was a huge loss this year as well, and should really help the entire back end perform better next year. I thought Christian had a very nice year all things considered and Rapp looks like a bonafide stud. Scott is a keeper for STs and could work his way into some playing time.

Free agency & draft priority: low

Hopefully the Rams resign Christian and move on from Weddle and call it a day in safety free agency. The only name that moves the needle is Clinton Haha Dix, but only if they want to keep Rapp as a 3rd safety or big nickel LBer and I think they have bigger plans for him then that.

As far as the draft goes, if Christian isn't re-signed and Weddle is let go, there is some depth needed behind JJ3 and Rapp. I think Scott makes a nice 4th safety so go get a FS in the draft. Later on of course. Shyheim Carter from Alabama is an interesting player that can play some nickel, has played some FS and the Rams could deploy him all over the field. I think the 4th or 5th round seems right for him. Antoine Brooks Jr is another intriguing guy that plays like a big nickel LBer and I could see the Rams playing him all over the field as well. He is a thumper and exceptional blitzer. def. a day 3 guy. Nigel Warrior because he is an ultra rangy FS with a cool name you can get late on day 3.
