welcome back
I think it was a couple of things
1) Higbee was always a ridiculous athlete
2) He matured and I saw it in 2018 made huge clutch athlete catches
3) McVay had to adjust - His 3WR offense just wasn’t as effective.
4) When he got the opportunity he seized it
I believe it is sustainable
I will say it again 6’5 250lb TEs don’t grow on trees. Higbee is one of favorites players on this team
I'd add a couple more things ....
1. Apparently the rolling /moving pocket plays right with the TE down and out routes and the in routes in the offence. The position becomes the primary read and a great match up. Protection problem solved and matriculation down field accomplished. Offence produces.
2. Apparrently The 3 WR routes commenly used in offence seem to restrict the normal TE routes and often lower the position in the priority of reads when Goff stays in pocket. Goff out of pocket different picture.
3. Higbee may have been called on to release more often than block last set of games and that helps targets of course ( Even watching Niners keeping Kittle in to block it's a win for any D and a loss for his stats same for Higbee). Higbee going out opens up offence more. OL handling itself more (Trust +competent improvement) allows more Higbee release.
4. The injury to Everett helped a focus on Higbee as matchup advantage.
5.Teams went after Kupp like white corpusels in Fantastic Voyage.
It only made sence to look for Higbee , Woods, and Reynolds.

I think it's sustainable as a answer to certain attacks by defence yes.
I also believe he will draw more coverage by a safety next year as well as forcing LBS away from run D.
His rise is great but they will need to scheme uses of the RB in the passing game better as well.
He's not the final answer for the offence uptick passing wise or overall but it's great to know he can do more with good schemes and increased targets.
Wish him the best.
