With the NFC East leader having a sub-500 record before the latest game, there were complaints about the current playoff system. I wouldn't be in favor of a new system in which the division winners aren't guaranteed a playoff birth, but I have an idea for a new system that would be reasonable. Allow all teams with at least 10 wins to make the playoffs. In some seasons, this would mean one or two extra wild card teams (it could even mean more, but it would be harder to deal with that case). If there is one extra wild card team, then only one team gets a bye in the first round. If there are two extra wild card teams, no team would get a bye in the first round. Such a system would have the following advantages: (1) the division winners would still make the playoffs, (2) every team with 10 or more wins would still make the playoffs, and (3) there would still be three weeks of playoffs leading up to the Super Bowl. The downside is that one or two teams would not get a first round bye, but something has to give whenever the system is changed.
