I plead naïveté.
I thought they were done filming in 2007. I thought they’d just grind a little harder. Given their character, Deflate Gate was just a new twist on cheating.
So, when they beat the Seahawks and beat the Falcons, I just thought it was self inflicted losses by the losing teams.
Once they beat the Rams I thought they finally won a legit super bowl instead of cheating to win the first three and being gifted their 4th and 5th.
Well, they are stilling filming. How far back does this go? Zach Thomas is a first year coach. Not enough I’ll gotten info on him? Well, McVay was a new coach last year. Did Belichick film the Rams? If so, when and where?
There's just too much about the Patriots and their success through the years to assume they were not cheating. Not the least of which is the fact that they keep getting caught cheating. Ultimately, they have no real incentive to stop. If I knew that I could cheat on a test, score higher than anyone else, get caught, get "punished" and still be the valedictorian? And people would applaud me for trying instead of condemning me for cheating? Sportsmanship and ethics wouldn't outweigh those temptations for most.
But this incident may actually tarnish the Patriots. I think those who have glossed over their cheating in the past have done so, in part, because of the opposition. If you're facing Peyton Manning and the Colts or the Rams in the Super Bowl, cheating is just considered trying for many. Any advantage you can gain in tough matchup is a reasonable means to an end. But, to cheat against the 1 win Bengals? That may actually cast a new light on just how low they will go.
