This stuff of being careful with him has not worked.
The Rams offense under McVay, prior to this year, ran through Gurley. This year Gurley has been bubble wrapped. How do we like the results?
All year Gurley has seemed very subdued. Why? Because he's "the man". He's used to being "the man". He wants to be "the man". And he can be "the man" if McVay will just let him. He's been frustrated after being relegated to just another guy.
I'm not discounting the realities of his knee. But 80% of Gurley isn't enough. McVay needs to use him until he can't perform anymore. Then worry about it at that time. That's the life of RBs in this league. That's the reason I was against the Rams giving Gurley..... or any RB..... the big bucks. They are beat to death and there is no predicting how long they can be at peak.
