Gurley remarked that it was good running behind this OL because they are big.
So what’s the difference? Well, there’s Corbett, Edwards and Evans, instead of Noteboom, Havenstein, and especially Allen.
The new guys are a bigger, thicker, and stronger, and get more push.
Disagree.
The issue is that with Hav out, you no longer had youngsters plus TWO regressing OTs. That--2 regressing OTs and 2 new young starters--is a formula for disaster. But the mistake in that situation is to assume you're assessing the youngters's talent. They CAN'T look good under those conditions.
For a season and a half Gurley ran behind Sullivan and Blythe, neither of which are big guys. But then they had Saffold and the 2 OTs were both functioning well. The unit as a whole cohered in ways they couldn't and didn;t earlier this year with both OTs having fallen off.
With 4 replacements including Blythe at center, the OL coherence issues got negated and the unit as a whole played in sync. Usually 4 OL replacements is a bad thing, but they had young depth that could play, which is a rare thing.
