TRANSCRIPT: Rams Head Coach Sean McVay - Conference Call - October 29, 2019

(On trading CB Aqib Talib and what Talib meant to the team during his time with the Rams)
“(Ccool smiley Aqib (Talib) has meant a whole lot. He’s meant a whole lot to our team. I think just the confidence, the swagger, the veteran leadership that he’s brought – he’s been, really, a big part of what’s gone on since he got here and he’s been nothing but positive since he got here. Like I’ve said, I think he’s a Hall of Fame player. Everything that we do is in the best interest of the team long-term and short-term and just based on some of the things that came from that, that was really what went into the decision. But, nothing but a lot of good things from our end on Aqib, what he’s meant to us and, specifically, what he’s meant to me ...”

(On if the way the team has played the last two weeks gave the organization confidence to trade Talib)
“You see the defense and again, this is as much as anything about the circumstance that have come about over the last couple of weeks – so that’s been a part of it. At the end of day, it’s being able to make decisions that we feel like are in the best interest of the team. Sometimes, … needs to be done. But again, like I said, I can’t say anything but great things about the human and what he’s meant to our locker room, the positives he’s brought to this team and what he’s meant to us the last year and a half.”

(On if there is an update on WR Brandin Cooks)
“He’s feeling good…he’s very aware of what’s going on and he can talk about what occurred pre-concussion. He’s aware…we are going to send him to a specialist. He’s actually on his way there in Pittsburg. I’m trying to see if we can get a little bit more clarity, because most important is (WR) Brandin Cooks as a human being right now, not necessarily the football player. Let’s get a better idea of what’s exactly is going on, so that we can at least make the best decision for him moving forward. Hopefully, being able to do that will give us some answers we’ll find more information about that.”

(On how concerning is it for Cooks to have two concussions in the span of two weeks)
“I think we are just taking it a day at a time. At least try to get some information to Brandin and then, we can make a decision that is best for him. Anytime that you have something like this occur, you want to consider the human being first and foremost, and that’s what we are going to do, take our time. No question, it will be something that we are going to be smart with. I think being able to get some answers, hear some other opinions on what’s going on, and other cases that have been like this will give us some clarity to hopefully, make the best decision for Brandin Cooks the person and the football player.”

(On S John Johnson III posting on social media that he was going into surgery today)
“Yep, he is...He was scheduled for surgery today…We’ll get those updates.”

(On his thoughts on Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur doing really well this season while other rookie coaches are having a tough season)
“He’s doing a great job…and they’ve got some good momentum. Obviously, they’ve played extremely well, and they’ve had a great quarterback lead the way. They’ve made some key acquisitions on the defensive side of the ball. When you look at (Green Bay Packers Head Coach) Matt (LaFleur) and his ability to work with (Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator) Coach (Mike) Pettine in unison and kind of getting everything going, they seem like they’ve got great chemistry. So, for him being one of my close friends, it certainly is fun to watch from afar and see those guys do their thing.”

(On if he ever thought of why young quarterbacks are able to play and do well this season)
“We take it one game at a time...Really, a lot of it is a credit to those players (inaudible) and kind of understand some of the nuances of the position quicker and it’s coaches putting them in good spots and them being there in situations where their surrounding teammates are making plays. Anytime that you’re able to play at a high level...What you love so much about football, it’s such a great team sport and in a lot of...perform their job at a high level.”

(On what progress LB Clay Matthews is making and what his last steps are to making the post bye-week return that he felt optimistic about)
“…He’s feeling good. I really just think it’s going to be a matter of how quickly and how comfortable does he feel as far as, ‘All right, I’m ready to go,’ and play full contact…in the absence of some of that restrictive protection that he’s had. He’s on track for that. Again, it’s something that we will take it a day at a time…I think ultimately those will be things that we will continue to monitor in the days to come. He’s gotten all of that stuff taken out off of his jaw and he’s feeling good.”

(On if there were any other injuries that came out of Sundays game)
“No, everybody else came out clean and that’s a positive for us.”

(On if everyone made it onto the plane after celebrating the win)
“Everybody made it on…I really was the last one to get on the bus because we were looking for my fiancé’s passport. I thought she lost it, and I had actually put it in my bag. Everybody was accounted for, we were just waiting on the head coach…I thought we were going to have to stay a couple extra days until we get the passport taken care of.”
