Believe it or not, W, it is actually a common thing to not get that reference.
I can show you an entire conversation on twitter where a sports writer made that reference, got schooled for his ignorance, and he had to patiently explain it was from that movie.
So these are precarious days for Animal House references.
But in terms of not getting a joke--my apologies, but maybe use a smiley to signal that there is irony or humor afoot.
