Wow I told a friend who reads the board ( Hi Brad) it could be ligament injury and with that surgery it has to be exactly that. There is a rehab after that and there will be weakness in the second knuckle down for a while.
I had a simular injury roller skating many years ago. Thumb wouldn't stabilise and was bending the opposite way. Didn't have surgery but needed a cast .
If only it could have somehow been on his left thumb .
Oh well.
