Re: Rams opened in shot gun and 4 WRs

September 08, 2019 05:30PM
They came in guns blazing trying to get after what McVay thought was a favorable matchup against the Panthers secondary. Problem was Goff was off. I originally thought it was nerves but he actually just wasn't sharp all game. They ran very little jet or play action in the first half.

However in the second half they opened with back to back play action passes that got them 2 big chunk first downs to Cooks. Basically the play action and deep gig to Cooks back to back. From there the run game got going and it never looked back. The Rams as you know don't run a ton of different run plays but today they ran several pitches, draws in addition to the signature outside zone plays. When Goff has action he does better than when there isn't.

Dead I’d have to watch again... I’m not sure if they did go to 2TE formations as a result of that first half or not. They did run some for sure but jut not sure of frequency. They did not run much at all in the first half but certainly Brown was more effective of the two. Gurley has a knee issue and IMO it showed today too but the second half he had a ton more room and broke off some huge chunk runs as a result

I was working for my oldest daughters junior class fundraiser today and the only game on was of course the Vikings. (who BTW look really good running the OZB scheme with Cook and that revamped OL)

SO having only just got home and seeing some stats and such, I have a few questions. I would love some input.

1. Did the Rams run a 11 personnel with 3 WRs or did McVay switch it up? Any 2 TE sets? 4 Wide?

2. The Leg kicked a bunch of FGs, so did the offense stall in the redzone again a bunch or what happened there?

3. At one point I saw Gurley was 5 carries for 8 yards and Brown was 5 carries for 31 or 23 yards. Gurley's knee not right? Rusty? Just not seeing the holes?

4. Brown vultured 2 TDs, was, he subbing in for Gurley to pound them in or was it just on Browns drives?

5. Was there any Big Nickel run today, I thought we would see a bunch of 3-3-5 with Rapp as that Big Nickel/4th LBer. Or did Weddle's injury muck all that up?

6. For as many passes as Goff threw, and for throwing for less then 200 yards, was he just checking down all day?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. A road win with no preseason and a good opponent is good enough for me not to complain, but next week the ammunition thrown against these Rams will get bigger and with more frequency. I hope this game gets them up to speed quickly.
