Yes, with minor variations his rookie contract remains intact. The extension is an add-on and does not start until 2021. They did the same thing with Cooks and Donald.
If they had scratched the rookie contract and started the new contract in 2019, his 8.9 M cap hit this year could have as much as tripled, and they don't have anything near the cap space for that.
I don't think they really re-worked the 2 remaining years on the rookie contract. I think that with (like I said) minor variations those years are the same as before.
