I have seen young men waste some of their best years chasing pipe dreams. Right or wrong is in the eye of the beholder, but being lured into the possibility of the life of a pro athlete has definitely had a negative impact on some lives. I have seen it first hand.
It may have turned out to be a pipe dream, but it was the player's dream, not somebody else's.
Who's doing the luring? I would say the player themselves.
I get your point that in the end all of that time was probably a waste but it was the player who made the choice to chase THEIR dream. I may be interpreting your post wrong but it sounds like you're blaming someone other than the player.
