Dick Vermeil had hired Greg Robinson initially, who failed and the Chief defense was a mess and Gunther Cunningham brought it back to somewhat respectability, but still could not get Vermeil a playoff victory in Kansas City. As much as I loved Vermeil, that was his penance for retiring too early.

As to Cunningham respected DC and was 16-16 as Chief Head Coach far better than others, but was fired and replaced by Vermeil, who he went back to work for, which is rare and might been the only time a former Head Coach worked for his replacement. RIP Gunther!
