Went earlier than anticipated by whom? Rankings by teams account for fit so often do not match what online gurus say. If you took the top 100 players list from all 32 teams, I doubt any 2 of them would be even close to the same. So what does taken earlier than expected mean? Especially from the 2nd round on.
Here are some of the low picks and UDFAs who have done well as Rams OL since the 1960:
Charlie Cowan (4th round)
Joe Greco (just not with the Rams) (3rd round)
Duval Love (10th round)
Fred Miller (4th round)
Rich Saul (8th round)
Joe Scibelli (10th round)
Doug Smith (udfa)
Jackie Slater (3rd round)
Ryan Tucker (4th round)
The 99 OL included not just Pace but Tom Nutten (originally a UDFA, bargain pick up by the Rams),Gruttadauria (same as Nutten), Timmerman (originally 7th round pick), and Fred Miller (5th round pick).
Coaches who know how to spot linemen (like Kromer) find them. None of that is a guarantee, but I suspect there's more to these 2 players than you apparently assume there is. There are good reasons to say that.
