Rams hosted Michigan State CB Justin Layne for pre-draft visit

Cornerback isn’t widely viewed as one of the Los Angeles Rams’ biggest roster needs heading into the 2019 NFL draft, but it’s a position that’s definitely in consideration at No. 31 overall. Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib will both be free agents after next season, leaving very little certainty at corner in 2020.

The Rams are exploring their options and hosting prospects for pre-draft visits, most recently bringing in Michigan State cornerback Justin Layne. He posted on his Instagram story Friday that he was at the Rams’ facility.

Layne is viewed as a first-round prospect, but he’s far from a lock to go in the first 32 picks. This cornerback class is somewhat underwhelming at the top and it’s not yet clear which one will be the first off the board.

Layne should be a potential target for the Rams in Round 1, especially considering how much interest they’ve shown in the prospect. He told The Athletic last month that the Rams were among five teams that have inquired the most with him.

Layne wouldn’t be forced into the starting lineup right away, which could actually benefit him. He’s not a perfect prospect and could use some development, so allowing him to sit behind Talib and Peters for a year might do him a lot of good.

He’s a perfect fit in a press-man scheme, standing at 6-foot-2 with 33-inch arms. He also has good ball skills, breaking up 15 passes last season and another eight the year before. Layne’s combination of size and fluidity is difficult to find, which makes him an intriguing target in the first round for L.A.
