In a 5 game stretch, you'd like to see your bench arm go 3-5. Just over the .500 mark
That was an on-going issue for the Rams,
And for any team having to field their backup.

There are two items here for historic thought.
1. Shaun Hill could have had redemption if not for a absurd middle pass that was intercepted by the Chargers. Big IF but the type of play that can be franchise altering, if not at least season altering. I'll note, too, that Hill was tough snot, and at times looked good

Hill's record reflects exactly what you need from your backup. In 8 appearance, will you go 3-5 or 5-3? He went 3-5.
But there it is. Had he gone 4-4 in those 8 starts? Changes the season. As we know, a 7-9 record sends you home for the post season. 9-7 gives you a shot.

2. Case Keenum
I didn't list his season in 2016 because he was the starter, however he was on short time anyway with Goff on the sideline. Truth of it was that he went 4-9. Yet again, one game of being above .500 Another tough guy, and capable of better. Clearly, he went and got himself a fat contract.

I don't know what to expect of a Bortles, but if they have to come on the field? I think we can do a lot better than how Sean Mannion appeared.
In his few snaps, I was always looking for that smart brains, and that strong arm to combine for good things. NOT CLOSE. He had a nice preseason somewhere along the line, but I'd take back a Fitzpatrick in a flash over Mannion.
