The Super Bowl is a funny game.
Losing in the Super Bowl somehow makes you feel like the season was a failure.
Just today I am thinking about some things, based on what I am reading on this board.
* Just two years ago, we had just hired a new head coach. He has already taken us to a Super Bowl
* Just two years ago, we thought our top of the draft QB was a failure. He has also taken part in taking us to a Super Bowl.
* Just two years ago, we had not had a winnning season or a playoff appearance in so many years i do not want to count.
* Just two years ago, we had a receiving corps that may have been the worst in the NFL
* Just two years ago, we had an OL that was a sieve.
Since that time
*We have the coach that everyone is trying to hire a copy of
* Our QB has gotten better each year and is, at a minimum, a top 10 QB with lots of room to mature and grow
* We have gone to the playoffs twice and to the Super Bowl once
* In the Super Bowl, against what are arguably the GOAT coach and QB, we held the game to a tie through the beginning of the 4th quarter.
* Our OL has been the envy of the NFL and a strength of the team
* We have the best 1-2-3 set of wideouts in the NFL. I would not trade our WRs for any teams
* With a young coach and a young QB, we have lots of room to continue growing and getting better
Now a few things
* Our young QB struggled in the SB. It was his first, he appeared nervous and played below his ability. Bear in mind that one of the greatest defensive minds of our generation had two weeks to create a plan to limit our offense and our QB. Perhaps some are comparing Goff's first SB to Brady's. And perhaps that is not fair as Brady is the greatest SB QB in the history of the league. I for one am strongly behind Goff and excited to see where he goes next. I am not thinking that we might bring in Blake flaking Bortles as "competition."
* We have some superstars on our team that are getting paid like it. I am glad we have superstars.
* As a result of having some expensive superstars, we can't pay anyone we want to come in. We are going to have weak spots. We can't afford pro bowlers at every position and that is okay. No one else can either.
* On the other hand, our front office has shown in recent years that they are as good as any and better than most at finding diamonds in the rough and filling weak spots with cheap players who can play. Littleton, Kupp, JJ, are just a few of those diamonds.
Anyway, more than anything, I just wanted to say how excited I am to be living through this era of Rams football, how thunderstruck I still am that we went from worst to SB in just two years, and I hope that others, while always pushing us to be better, can appreciate what we have right now.
The majority of the key players are young. McVay, Snead, Goff, Donald, Gurley and many others.
A friend of mine asked me if I was unhappy the Rams lost the Super Bowl. My answer was: "I'm just happy we made the playoffs!"
I agree with you - we're poised for a nice run and I am going to savor it as much as I can.
