Not that Boom and Allen are inadequate. Kromer clearly thinks that both are.
But now OL has moved way up the draft/FA priority list. Possibly as high as our 31st pick.
This, despite a crying need at edge and DL to replace Suh. Not to mention a possible ILB, future CB’s (note the plural), and a future S.
Backup RB and QB need to be addressed, too.
Geez... I’ll be honest. I woulda tried harder to find the $11M for Saffold. Sigh...
I beg to differ slightly.
I don’t think OL has moved up for the Rams at all. They always knew they were going to draft OL this year and Snead said so in an interview last week right before (or after I don’t recall) they released Sullivan.
It was that interview that made me think they wouldn’t retain Saffold. But he point blank said, we have young guys who will step up that we drafted last year and
we’ll draft more this year.
EDIT: Snead in that interview also specifically mentioned that Noteboom is still being groomed to take over for Whit which obviously means they have to get a future OG in the house. They are working their plan. And it was always to draft more OL this year. Nothing has changed!
Based on that, my guess is, Snead drafts more OL in the same range he always has: upper mid rounds. I’m thinking mostly the two 3rds and 4th but wouldn’t rule out the 1st.
As for the other parts of their plan going by things they’ve said:
1) Brockers replaces Suh.
2) JFM replaces Brockers. Of course depth is needed. But that can come from anywhere including min. vets, late round draftees, and UDFAs.
3) They haven’t said anything about edge. But if someone falls to 31, they probably jump on that.
4) Haven’t they all but pretty much said that Kiser is the plan here? It fits with the theme of what they’ve been saying: that last years’ draft was with an eye for now. Another point in favor of this position is that the D is starting to reflect Wade’s historical priorities. Cheap ILB’s, money spent on pass rushers and the secondary. I doubt ILB is a high draft concern for them.
5) Does future S really have to be done now? Weddle’s in the house for 2 years and they just tendered Countess. They’ve compared Weddle to Whit which if that holds true means the intent is for him to play out that contract. They've bought themselves some time. I’m not saying don’t draft one but it will be later and nothing to have anxiety about.
6) I think they just said that CJ will be the plan unless he prices himself out of their range. So far, he hasn’t signed and the RB market isn’t too high. Ingram just signed for $5M. CJ will be considerably less than that IMO. I’m thinking $3.5M. But they also said if CJ prices himself out of their plans, they turn to M. Brown who they just tendered. Backup RB is not a draft concern.
7) Backup QB is a draft concern. And we’ve heard “don’t be surprised” to see them draft a backup QB.
So judging by all the clues - their words, actions, and past tendencies - our draft needs will be: Edge, OL depth, DL depth, backup QB, CB
