But it might take them out of the market for an edge rusher and they end up overpaying an average player.
That said, there aren't many good players out there at that position. Houston? And of course it was probably close to the going rate for Fowler so if they wanted him they were going to have to pay a seller's market price.
Overall not bad. I like Fowler. I am hoping his ceiling is really high. If the opportunity was there, I would have still liked to have seen how offenses handled both a proven vet on the outside and Donald. But likely the opportunity was not there. So this was probably the best scenario: Signing a young player with upside to an incentive-laden one year prove contract.
I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt but I’m still skeptical with the decision to go with Fowler at all.
They are betting that he has untapped potential and will suddenly realize it. I’m not convinced. I mostly see a young age. I don’t know what makes them think he’s suddenly going to be a 10+ sack guy.
I would have preferred to send a 5th for Houston and paid him $15M this season instead of Fowler $14M. Notice not much a difference in price there. Although if Fowler only cost $11M plus incentives as rumored that makes it more palatable.
If he only ends up with 6 sacks, as is his average for 16 games, it was a failed move.
So for me, there is doubt on this move but because they’ve been so good at managing the roster, they get the benefit of the doubt.
