Defies all logic if one puts oneself in the mindset of a sharp businessman who is a multi-billionaire in the public eye.

IOW, what the hell was he THINKING?

Sorry old friend but the fact that a guy has wealth does not indicate he has some kind of overall high intelligence. It just means he has a business mentality which is no guarantee he is qualified in any other specific way. Besides, it's not like he;'s self-made--in his first job, he was hired by his father in law.

Besides if having a lot of money or having a head for business really made you smarter and more reasonable all the way around, the world we live in would be very different from the way it actually is.

On top of it we know from psychology that "intelligence" is not just one single thing that someone can have more of or less of in general. There's different kinds of intelligenceS and people who excel in one type of activity often quite simply stumble in others. For example what makes someone a top physicist may not translate to something as seemingly simple as coaching a little league baseball team intelligently.

And since our attractions and interests along those lines are deeply beyond individual emotional choosing, for all we know he has a thing precisely for the more squalid version of things.
