Turns out Malavasi did not know that Dreyer's contract specified how much playing time he got so in effect he could not be replaced, he was guaranteed to start. That led to cutting him, and then Malavasi found out that he had a guaranteed contract. Dreyer's quip about that was that to thank the Rams for paying for his acting lessons.
I don't blame Malavasi. By 1981 Dryer was a 13 year vet with declining production. Malavasi was not privvy to a lot of contract details for some reason and that I put on the Rams dysfunctional front office practices.
