I always say it's a rock-paper-scissors league. Right now, it seems teams are trying so hard to focus on preparing defenses to play against high Octane offenses in the playoffs. After all....it's likely you will have to face Brees, Mahomes, Goff, etc. The Seahawks recognized they had limited talent this year at the skill positions, so they weren't going to move the ball upfield trying to throw the ball. So, they went double tight end and decided to run the ball the entire game. Teams eventually knew they were going to do it....but still couldn't stop it. It think this is because defenses today are build to stop the pass game (with all the focus on edge rushers, obsession with sacks, etc)
McVay started experimenting with 12 personnel, and started pounding the rock. Coach Garrett of the Cowboys said during his presser that the Cowboys knew the Rams were going to try to go run heavy.....but that the Cowboys just couldn't execute on defense. So the good news here is.....the Rams did nothing to surprise the Cowboys.....it's just that the Cowboys couldn't stop it.......and they have a pretty good run defense.
The even better news is that ....unlike the Seahawks....the Rams are dang good at the skill positions and have a number of capable (some might say underutilized) weapons they can go to when needed.
Goff looks comfortable as a game manager....because he knows he is capable of taking out the dagger if the Rams need him to.
